Colleagues, we need to continue to improve and defend our education system as one of the best in the world. We will face political, financial challenges and threats to our profession but we will continue to fight together for Alberta teachers, students and families.

I have had the privilege to work for the teachers of Central South as your District Representative since 2017. Over the past four years, I have been proud to represent teachers at rallies, Canadian Teachers’ Federation and provincial committees: Resolution, Wellbeing of Children and Youth, Political Engagement, DEHR, Inclusive Education and Council of School Counsellors. I am currently the Chair of Communication, Advocacy and Political Engagement Committee. I am excited for the opportunity to continue to be your voice on Provincial Executive Council as I run for re-election in the 2021 PEC elections.

I am proud of my thirty year teaching career, twenty of it with Red Deer Public and all of it teaching students with unique social, emotional and learning exceptionalities. Everyday has been a joy and a challenge and I continue to love teaching and my work with the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

I believe the strength of our Association is not in Provincial Executive Council. The real power of the Association to defend education is in the strength of 36 000 teachers. My guiding philosophy and my campaign platform is COMMUNICATION, LEADERSHIP, EXPERIENCE and ADVOCACY.

Communication is a passion of mine and if I am re-elected District Representative I will continue to connect with teachers, individually and in the numerous local committees, listen and share ideas and information, and bring their voice to Provincial Executive Council.

COMMUNICATION. LEADERSHIP. EXPERIENCE. ADVOCACY.

COMMUNICATION

I have endeavoured to meet and hear the voices of as many teachers as possible to hear the successes and challenges of each local and understand the dynamics of each local in Central Alberta.  Many of the conversations I have had with individual teachers  were before and after meeting or on the phone;  allowing me to hear as many viewpoints as possible to authentically represent the teachers I serve. Please continue to message me so that I can understand and represent the views of our teachers with other locals and provincially.

LEADERSHIP

As a leader in the Association, I have endeavoured to represent the views of teachers in decision making and actively represented the goals and values of the Association to teachers, politicians, the media and communities.  I have worked hard to support and enhance Locals’ ability to conduct their core business of supporting teachers by attending every local and provincial meeting possible within my scope.  In my role, I have shared information, provided clarity on provincial decisions and shared the views of our teachers with the Provincial Executive Council.

I hope that I have inspired teachers to become informed and to stand up as a leader for our Association and the cause of education in Alberta.

EXPERIENCE

  • Many years serving Red Deer Public as Communication Officer (LCO), Political Engagement Officer (LPEO) and Vice President

  • Two terms District Representative

  • Served on the following Provincial Committees: Provincial Executive Council, Canadian Teacher Federation, DEHR, Wellbeing of Children and Youth, Political Engagement, Resolutions, Executive Staff Officer hiring and Negotiating Committees, Council for Inclusive Education, Council of School Counsellors, Teachers’ Convention, Chair of Communication, Advocacy, and Political Engagement Committee (CAPEC)

ADVOCACY

I have remained strongly committed to advocating for the teachers of Central South. I have shared the news and actions of the provincial Association with our teachers at every opportunity and conversely shared our local issues and triumphs with the Provincial Executive Council.  I have provided support in the operation of our local committees and encouraged teachers to run for provincial committees and actively endorsed their nominations. I facilitated the sharing of the expertise of specialist councils to add to the messages of the Association around special education and inclusion rooms and the impact of Covid on the return to school stress.

I ENCOURAGE TEACHERS TO VOTE

IN THIS YEAR'S PEC ELECTIONS.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE?

Provincial Executive Council (PEC) is a 20 person committee that conducts the business of the Association between Annual Representative Assembly meetings. PEC is made up of the elected representatives of Alberta teachers plus the Association's executive secretary. There are 5 executives, known as table officers and 15 District Representatives who represent 11 geographic districts.
